Remember that scene in The Lord of the Rings when the fellowship was running through that valley of rocks? That was pretty much the entire movie, right? Now welcome to Castle Hill, land of rocks, rocks, and even more rocks.
Although LOTR wasn’t actually shot here, nearby Flock Hills was used to shoot a battle scene for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Still, no disappointments here. I’d be a Hobbit’s shoemaker if you didn’t feel the least bit enchanted by this place.
For all you climbers out there, this unique outcropping of limestone is supposedly the epitome of South Island’s climbing scene. Unfortunately, after testing my scaling skills at the Roxx Climbing Centre, I think I’ll leave these boulders to the professionals. I, on the other hand, have discovered a better form of transportation.
